Barbara Sarafian, born in Ghent on April 16, 1968, is a much-beloved veteran actress from Belgium. As a young student, Sarafian took a deep dive into acting at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Antwerp and at Parallax in Brussels.

Despite a traumatic past that she could never recover from, Ethel Waters had a groundbreaking trajectory in show business. She had a thriving recording career and a string of nightclub hits.

It’s been a long time coming, but lately women have stepped up to the plate and become major players in front of and behind the camera. Women are no longer invisible, and the growing trend in recent years is of women in Hollywood gaining more opportunities not only as actors but in careers which include such positions as directors, writers, producers, cinematographers and editors.

For Women’s History Month, we are highlighting several women who are making a mark in Hollywood through sheer talent, tons of hard work, lots of patience, and a good dose of spunk. The disparity in pay scale and lack of professional opportunities and just plain respect has often been mentioned in reference to women creatives in Hollywood.

As we observe International Women’s Day this March 8, as part of Women’s History Month, it seems like a good time to reflect on just how much progress women in Hollywood have made in the past year. The answer today may be disappointing.

Nathan Lane, one of the most versatile Broadway and Hollywood actors, and star of numerous plays, musicals, TV shows, and animated and live-action movies, is back on the stage with “Pictures From Home,” his 25th Broadway play. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on February 3, 1956, Lane has appeared in more than 35 films, garnering two nominations for Golden Globes as a leading actor in the musical/comedy category for The Birdcage (1997) and The Producers (2006).

1920 is avowedly associated with the beginnings of jazz. Two years after the end of World War I, its aftermath brought a yearning for escape as a pandemic, the Spanish flu, was winding down, having infected over 500 million people worldwide and causing over 25 million deaths.
