Hair and Makeup Trends: How to get them – Zendaya, Selena Gomez & more

Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Kerry Washington

What do Zendaya and Kerry Washington have in common? Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez? How about Taylor Swift and Jenna Ortega? Michelle Williams and Katy Perry? We mean, other than all of them being Golden Globe nominees. The answer is: They are known for being fashion savvy. All are sporting new hair and/or make-up looks. Want to be inspired?  We tell you how to get the look.

There’s something exciting going on in fashion. Color has really switched things up. But so has style. We are living in an era where there are fewer rules. It’s really difficult to come up with something fresh because everything is ‘now.’ When everything goes, what is the trend? How do you reinvent yourself?

This gallery shows that ‘new’ is still possible. These image-makers, many of them Golden Globe nominees or winners, are on the front end of the hair and makeup trends that will dominate as we head into summer and beyond.

Yara ShahidiEiza González

Makeup Trend: The natural look

(Left to Right) Yara Shahidi and Eiza González glow while looking completely natural. How do they do it? The beauties are using a trick from the 70s and updating it. Natural peach through brick colors enhance the face. Bronzers used as blush and repeated on the eyes make the face consistent as though sun-kissed. Yara has used a red-brown on cheeks, eyes, and temples. She finished it with a bright mouth. Eiza González used a dawn blush and repeated the same tone on her lips. The effect? Totally stunning, totally natural.

Michelle WilliamsTaylor Swift

Hair Trend: Bangs

Above: (Left to Right) Michelle Williams and Taylor Swift each sport red lips, but the trend is in the bangs. Julia Roberts popped up recently with the new ‘do’. They can be worn thick and full as favored by Taylor Swift, or feathery like Michelle Williams. Lighter bangs allow them to be side-swept or blended off the face without the commitment.

Selena Gomez

Hair Trend: The pulled-back ‘do’.

Above: Selena Gomez has long been a fan of the look. You can do so many things with it. A high pony, braids, a bun – high or low. The savvy singer and actress plays with the variations endlessly. See others who have updated this fashion fave. We tell you how.

Ariana GrandeJennifer Lopez

Hair Trend: The high-pony and groomed baby hairs.

Above:(Left to Right)

This is a strong look. Ariana Grande wears her hair scooped back, controlled, showing off her high cheekbones. From the front, the look is super sophisticated. From the back, instead of the expected bun there’s a long groomed ponytail.

Jennifer Lopez has added another trend for hair that is super groomed off the face – the ‘baby’ hairs that have not fully grown in on the brow have been harnessed into a curly-cue or pattern. The swirl is held in place by product and creates an interesting detail on the brow.

Lucy LiuRihanna

Hair: Variation on a trend – buns and parts.

Lucy Liu takes the same-pulled-back look but goes with a middle part. The hair is sectioned in the front. The rest, pulled upwards and backward, is secured at the crown of the head. It falls free in a pony. The front section is then parted and smoothed back to blend in with the hair on the crown.

Rihanna: Takes the middle part and leaves a section in the front loose to create tendrils that frame the face. The hair is smoothed back and up, secured. The pony is braided.

Dame Helen Mirren

Trend: The bun – and the side part.

Above: Dame Helen Mirren takes the pulled-back look and plays with the traditional bun in a soft bouffant bun on top of her head. Very 50s, very chic.

Cara Delevingne takes the bun and creates an off-center path. The look is classic, the askew parting makes it today.

Katy Perry is always reinventing herself by playing with hair color and style. Here, she has taken the side part, added height at the crown, and taken long bangs into a Jessica Rabbit-controlled side-sweep across the brow.

Miley Cyrus Beyoncé

Trend: The 60s Middle part with volume.

Miley Cyrus has gone two-toned. The hair has that fresh-from-the-beach feel, as though sprayed with salt water and left to crinkle naturally. It gives the length texture and is perfect for ladies who have a natural curl to their hair. For those who don’t: go for tiny corkscrews with a narrow curling iron, very briefly, and separate the curls individually while still warm, so they fall. Run your fingers through with a light spray or a little gloss.

Beyoncé has the middle part, and worked the hair in stages. She’s kept the hair close to the skull at the top, crimped above the cheekbones, then diffused it in descending volumes into a full mane at the shoulders. So, so fire!

Jenna Ortega Jenna Ortega

Trend: The short wolf cut

Above Right:

Jenna Ortega began this trend at the Golden Globes. It’s reminiscent of the Jane Fonda 70s Klute look, for which Fonda not only took home a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Motion Picture – Drama – but also popularized the style created for her character in the film. The hair is feathered with strong bangs and flipped upwards at the ends. It’s perfect for those who embraced the blunt cut and are growing it out.

Above Left:

Product flattens the hair, elongating it. Bangs are parted at the center. The longer hair has a little texture added with a small curling iron, the ends kept straight, so it kisses the shoulder blades.

Trend: Short, side part.

Below:

The blunt cut with side path is the newest look that is trending. Zendaya made it an instant hit on the NAACP red carpet. It takes the blunt cut, adds a side part, and delivers volume with a soft curl. Fresh and sensual.

Kerry Washington loves her blunt cut and has worn variations of the look for a while. Her curl is subtle, achieved with a round brush. Volume flares below the cheekbone to the chin. Niiiiiice.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the latest trends from your favorite stars. Which look will you try at home?
