Emma Stone and Billie Jean King on Love, Equality and Tennis
There are two, count’em, tennis movies bowing in Toronto this year: Janus Metz Pedersen’s Borg vs. McEnroe and Battle of the Sexes by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Golden Globe nominees for Little Miss Sunshine). As fate – and the tennis gods – would have it, the press screening for the latter, believe it or not, took place on the day of the US open men’s final! The film tells the story of the historic and farcical match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, which in 1973 became symbolic of fight for equal pay in sports and women’ equality in general. Emma Stone plays the legendary tennis champion. The HFPA’s Ramzi Malouki spoke to both at the Ryerson Theater premiere.
