The Festival Lumière is celebrating its tenth anniversary as the world’s premiere festival devoted to classic films. Held in Lyon every October, the festival is an homage to films as art as well as cherished objects or collective memory. Nothing like a movie can transport us back to the time and the place we first saw it and revive the emotions we felt and shared at the time. That simple intuition has allowed director Thierry Frémaux (also artistic director of the Cannes Festival) to stage a hugely successful festival, which draws an audience of 5,000 enthusiastic fans to the opening ceremony and screening held in the city’s repurposed general market and abattoir! The festival is the namesake of the brothers who invented cinema in this very city more than a century ago and it is sponsored by the Lumière Institute and Foundation which also manages the museum in the old Villa Lumière: a perfect setting for the screening of Michael Powell’s and Emeric Pressburger’s The Red Shoes, a Technicolor classic restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archives with the aid of an HFPA grant. HFPA president Meher Tatna was on hand at the festival to introduce the film.
