Isle of Dogs: Wes Anderson’s Adventure on Trash Island

A dastardly plot to exile all canines, an island made of trash, a near-futuristic “Japanese archipelago” as backdrop for a story which resonates eerily with the world we live in today. Wes Anderson’s latest stop motion Japan-tinged homage transports us to a world steeped in the work of Hayao Miyazaki and Akira Kurosawa’s early “city movies”, with a hint of The Little Prince for good measure. Written with Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Kunichi Nomura and voiced by an all-star cast of Anderson usual suspects, the film is an endearing, meticulously fabricated fairytale which is also the Texas director’s highest achievement in graphic design. We spoke with him as well as Schwartzman and Bill Murray following the rousing New York premiere.
