Kate Mara on Transcendence
The Christopher Nolan-produced Johnny Depp vehicle Transcendence which opens Friday is a sci-fi thriller that deals with artificial intelligence and the implications of such a computer-based “mind” turning on its creators – that is us lowly humans. The moment in which machines will be able to evolve independently of their original designers – what’s called the Singularity in tech lingo – is something many experts now consider inevitable. It’s also a theme that is cropping up more and more frequently in movies as anyone knows who has seen Her. In Transcendence Kate Mara plays the leader of a guerrilla style group of anti AI hackers that tries to stop an all-encompassing Johnny Depp consciousness from taking over the internet (wait, hasn’t that already happened?). The HFPA spoke to her exclusively about the film and how technology has become ubiquitous in our lives. Check out the video.
