The Marvel universe continues to expand on Netflix with the addition of Luke Cage to a lineup already featuring Daredevil and Jessica Jones (the streaming network also has Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher in the works). Cage, played by Mike Colter, a character originally created in the 70s in the wake of “Blaxploitation” movies, was introduced to audiences as Jessica Jones’ love interest. Now he headlines his own show, a characteristically dark series set in Harlem, and many have remarked on the special significance of a hero who is black and bulletproof given current events. Colter brings a brooding intensity to the character whose special powers are tempered by all-too-human introspection and self-doubt. We asked him about it.
