The Christopher Nolan-produced Johnny Depp vehicle Transcendence which opens Friday is a sci-fi thriller that deals with artificial intelligence and the implications of such a computer-based “mind” turning on its creators – that is us lowly humans. The moment in which machines will be able to evolve independently of their original designers – what’s called the Singularity in tech lingo – is something many experts now consider inevitable. It’s also a theme that is cropping up more and more frequently in movies, as anyone knows who has seen Her. In Transcendence Morgan Freeman plays a computer scientist that tries to stop an all-encompassing Johnny Depp consciousness from taking over the Internet (wait, hasn’t that already happened?).
