Pitt and Cotillard, “Allied” for Zemeckis

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard star in Robert Zemeckis’ Allied, a film, which feels as an updated throwback to another Hollywood era. A lot of that is due to its opening scenes in Casablanca, a location laden with Hollywood lore. Here in inescapable Bogey/Bacall fashion the two handsome protagonists meet as agents of a dangerous anti-Nazi operation coordinated by the Allied Secret Service. Soon their husband and wife cover becomes more than a useful fiction but their idyllic marriage is about to become embroiled in a web of espionage and deadly deceit. We spoke to Cotillard and the director about the film and how it marks an increasingly rarified territory: the independent Hollywood blockbuster.
