Riley Keough’s “Girlfriend” Experience

Like his movie of the same title, Steven Soderbergh’s series for Starz, The Girlfriend Experience, pushes the emotional envelope with its portrayal of a seemingly amoral call girl. Riley Keogh portrays Christine a law student who casually falls into extracurricular work for an agency that provides high-class girls to high-powered clients. It’s not just sex, but the approximation of a “girlfriend” experience, the simulation of an emotional relationship that pushes the narrative into uncomfortable territory and makes Christine such a compelling character study, even in a landscape full of morally ambiguous anti heroes. That emotional detachment, Keough recently told the HFPA, is precisely what drew her to a character very different from herself. Despite royal lineage (her grandfather is Elvis Presley) Riley is winning and easygoing and, much like her best friend from way back, Dakota Johnson, she’s headed for an exciting career.
