Like his movie of the same title, Steven Soderbergh’s series for Starz, The Girlfriend Experience, pushes the emotional envelope with its portrayal of a seemingly amoral call girl. Riley Keogh portrays Christine a law student who casually falls into extracurricular work for an agency that provides high-class girls to high-powered clients. It’s not just sex, but the approximation of a “girlfriend” experience, the simulation of an emotional relationship that pushes the narrative into uncomfortable territory and makes Christine such a compelling character study, even in a landscape full of morally ambiguous anti heroes.
