Trolls is not the first movie to be based on popular toys. That formula has not always proven successful but these adorable creatures based on the popular Danish dolls by Thomas Dam, just might be worthy heirs to the Lego Movie characters. That’s certainly what Dreamworks Animation is hoping for the latest movie by Shrek veterans Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn. With a voice cast that includes Zooey Deschanel, Russell Brand, James Corden and Gwen Stefani plus stars Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, it just may have a shot at animated – and musical – greatness. Or at least that’s the sense we had when we attended the exclusive preview in Cannes back in May, which included a special live performance by Kendrick and Timberlake, who executive produced the soundtrack for the film and composed four original songs for it.
