Matic Majcen

Matic Majcen (b. 1980) is a film critic, journalist, editor and film scholar from Slovenia. Since 2014 he has been writing for the nationwide daily newspaper Večer, where he is employed as a film critic and journalist. He is well known for his work as a correspondent from major film festivals, as he has been attending Berlin, Cannes, Venice (etc.) festivals for over a decade. Aside from his work as a film critic, he is also known for his academic work. In 2014, he obtained a PhD in sociology from the faculty of arts at University of Ljubljana, his thesis dealing with constructions of national identity in Slovenian post-independence cinema. In 2015, the thesis was published as a book under the title “Slovenian Post-Independence Cinema: Institution and National Identity.” In 2018, he published his second book “Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey,” which included detailed interviews with Douglas Trumbull and Jan Harlan. He is writing his third book, “Cinema: A Story of Two Machines.“ He is a lecturer on cinema in various public institutions and is especially known for his series of talks on cinema. He is active in elementary and high school education on cinema, giving introductory talks at school screenings and lecturing on history of cinema in schools across Slovenia.
