Shao-Yu Peng
Peng ShaoYu (born 1997) is a film critic and writer based in Taipei, Taiwan.
His work spans criticism, fiction, and essays, focusing on the intersections of cinema, memory, and geopolitics. He has contributed to leading publications in Taiwan and internationally, and is particularly known for his expertise in contemporary Taiwanese and South Korean cinema, with a focus on genre, social critique, and aesthetic experimentation.
Peng has participated in major international film festivals including Berlinale, Sundance, Busan, Locarno, and Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, covering films by first-time directors, underrepresented voices, and formally innovative storytellers.
He holds a Master’s degree in International Political Economy from King’s College London (UK) and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Diplomacy and International Business from National Chengchi University (Taiwan). His international academic training informs his interest in the political and cultural dimensions of cinema.
Peng is the author of “Dreaming in the Black Box” (2021), a collection of film criticism, and “The Premiere of the Past” (2025), a novel examining trauma, time, and cinematic memory. He currently serves on the board of the Taiwan Film Critics Society.
