The nominees in the Golden Globes category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture reflect the state of the entertainment industry. World box office counts and the stories told reflect a diversity in focus, on who is telling the story and through whose eyes we view the tale.
Angela Bassett, Golden Globe winner for 1994’s What’s Love Got To Do With It stars in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a superhero film set in Africa with a woman leading a nation against challenges from enemies within and without. Her credits include crowd pleasers like Black Panther and the Fallen franchise, as well as socially relevant films like John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood and Malcolm X.
Kerry Condon is a woman who refuses to buckle beneath the weight of a petty, male-dominated society in The Banshees of Inisherin. You’ll recognize the Irish-born actress from Better Call Saul and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Jamie Lee Curtis portrays a dual role in an immigrant’s story where nothing is what it appears to be in Everything Everywhere All At Once. This veteran of cinema has garnered eight nominations and two wins during her extensive career that includes drama (The Heidi Chronicles), comedy (A Fish Called Wanda), a horror franchise (Halloween) and action-adventure (True Lies).
Dolly de Leon turns the tables on the excessive, vacuous, monied class who use things and people to showcase their power in Triangle of Sadness. As a woman of a certain age from a non-dominant ethnicity and culture holding a service job, she is an unlikely protagonist. The film pokes fun at the values that society currently holds dear. You may know De Leon from Verdict and Midnight in a Perfect World. She is the first Filipino actress to receive this nomination.
Carey Mulligan is a reporter in She Said, battling postpartum depression, displaying that thing women are not supposed to reveal – ambition. Ambition to get the facts right. Ambition to showcase abuse. Ambition to succeed. The three-time nominee who hails from London has made a career portraying women who do the unexpected thing rather than the societal preferred thing. Other highlights in her career include Promising Young Woman and An Education.
All of the Golden Globe nominee’s portrayals can be summed up in this Angela Bassett quote to People magazine: “I want women to rise and fight back.” Each nominee does precisely that in her own way, depicting the rich variance of women in 2022.
