Nominee Profile 2023: “Top Gun”
Best Motion Picture – Drama – Nominee
and
Best Original Song – Motion Picture
Top Gun: Maverick reprises Tom Cruise’s starring role as United States Navy Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, following the original 1986 hit, Top Gun. Thirty years on, Maverick is a test pilot who opted out of a career advancement which would have grounded him,
training a detachment of Top Gun’s elite graduates on a special mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice. At the same time, he must confront the demons of his past as well as his deepest fears.
Maverick’s trainees and superiors are skeptical of putting him in this leadership role, notably Jon Hamm’s Vice Admiral ‘Cyclone’ Simpson, and Rear Admiral Cain, played by Ed Harris, who would prefer to ground Maverick, especially after he lost a combat aircraft during a training incident; eventually Maverick is able to assuage their doubts.
Top Gun has always been synonymous with electrifying stunts. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, this adrenaline-fueled aerial action film eclipses the antics of its predecessor, while cinematographer Claudio Miranda recreates the late Tony Scott’s style.
The film reprises some of the original film’s cast and welcomes a few newcomers.
Maverick’s rival from the original film, Val Kilmer’s Iceman, has risen through the ranks and has become a four-star admiral, The former frenemy has turned most definitely into a friend.
Miles Teller joins the cast as Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s former wingman, Goose, now deceased, and Jennifer Connelly replaces Kelly McGillis as his on-again-off-again love interest, Penny Benjamin, the daughter of a formal admiral.
On a budget of $170 million, Top Gun: Maverick has been declared the highest grossing film of 2022, with box office takings of $1.5 billion.
The film is up for two Golden Globe awards: Best Motion Picture Drama, and Best Song Motion Picture.
