Maslany No Orphan at Comic-Con

Tatiana Maslany is at her third Comic-Con and she’s having a grand time. Orphan Black, the groundbreaking, Golden Globe-nominated cloning sci-fi thriller in which she single-handedly plays like, 70% of the cast, was a little known show when she first came to San Diego three years ago. It has since become a genre classic and since the star was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2014, Orphan is a hot-ticket here. Tatiana stopped by the HFPA suite between events and told us that the “Con” is one of her favorite events. An avowed geek, the Canadian actress told us she packed her Ninja Turtle costume this year and hopes to slip it on to blend in with Convention Center fans before leaving town. “I love Comic-Con, I totally geeked out last night at a live taping of the Comedy Bang Bang podcast. I’m a huge fan”. Maslany who had small part in George Romero’s Diary of the Dead, has nothing but respect for the genre celebrated here and mused about its current popularity. “I’ve always loved zombie movies. The Zombie Apocalypse is like the scariest in an escapist sort of way. I guess it says something about society. Through genre you can explore themes of science and religion and politics. Plus there’s something fascinating about the plodding killer you can’t escape!” Orphan Black is just one of the BBC America shows featured here this year and the U.S. arm of the Beeb is definitely having a good “Con”. The Sherlock panel set the town abuzz yesterday and the Doctor (that’s Peter Capaldi, the twelfth Doctor Who, in case you’re wondering) is attending his first convention, adding a definite British flavor to the proceedings.
