German-Speaking Box Office, February 14, 2022
It was another “magically beautiful” week at the German box office: Wunderschön, the homegrown dramedy about four women of all ages by Karoline Herfurth topped the charts once again, just ahead of newest release Death on the Nile which beat two other debuts, Moonfall and Marry Me by, respectively, one and four spots.
It has to be said that German-speaking people come in a close second to the Brits in their love for all things Agatha Christie. The English crime-writer had and still has a huge following in German-speaking countries, and the original Death on the Nile – released in 1978 and starring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot along with a bevy of other superstars including David Niven, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury and Lois Chiles – stayed in the charts for more than four months. Kenneth Branagh’s remake seems set to be almost as enthusiastically embraced despite mixed international reviews. Branagh himself reprises the role of the Belgian detective with the distinctive moustache as he has done previously in Murder on the Orient Express in 2017. Co-starring Gal Gadot as the murder victim Linnet Ridgeway, the embattled Armie Hammer as Simon Doyle and Rose Leslie as Louise Bourget, the cast also includes Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Jennifer Saunders and Sophie Okonedo and Letitia Wright as mother and daughter Salome and Rosalie Otterbourne.
Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi adventure Moonfall, with Halle Berry and Owen Wilson, soared into third place, leaving longtime charters Sing 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home to round out the top 5. Jennifer Lopez’ new romcom Marry Me, which has the unfortunate German title Marry Me – Verheiratet auf den ersten Blick (Married at First Sight) debuted in sixth place followed by the longstanding The King’s Man and House of Gucci. Around the World in 80 Days stayed in ninth spot with Scream finishing up the German top ten.
In Austria, where Death on the Nile has not been released yet, Sing 2 hit the highest notes again for yet another week in the top spot, and crossed the €100,000 mark in its third week, followed by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is also still a high climber after eight weeks, while Germany’s Wunderschön debuted in place three.
The Austrians seem not to be amenable to a change of clothes or designers, however: why else would House of Gucci stick to a number four spot after two months? No wonder Scream(s) can be heard from number five, and the King’s Man must be wondering if he can ever surpass the Italians with his British brand of style. In number seven it’s Around the World in 80 Days, and Clifford, the Big Red Dog is still barking at number eight.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza and the Turkish-Austrian co-production Aykut Eniste 2 round out the top 10. This last film is a new release that has made into the charts.
Directed by Onur Bilgetay, it is his follow-up to the comedy Brother in Love (2019), his directing debut after he had worked as second unit and assistant director on an impressive number of local and international productions, including the Bond film Skyfall. In this sequel, the main character is ready to celebrate his wedding when another brother appears and wreaks comedic havoc.
