HFPA In Conversation: Lauren Graham Thrives on Positivity
Lauren Graham started acting in musical theatre and dreamed of a career on Broadway. Now she is fulfilling her desires with the musical comedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. “I just thought this show has a big heart and I love things that are positive,” she tells HFPA journalist Elisabeth Sereda.
She plays a tech company’s boss and mentors Zoey (Jane Levy). “I was stepping into a part that was pretty small. It was just fun to do something different and sing and dance and be with my friend, Jane. I could never have predicted I would do that a year or two years ago. It’s just when you think you’ve got it figured out you don’t, which might be true of everything in life but certainly in show business.”
Previously Graham has played roles like Lorelai Gilmore on Gilmore Girls – for which she received a nomination for the Golden Globe in 2002 – and Sarah Braverman on Parenthood. Over the years she has developed an appetite for creating stories. At the moment she is writing her fourth novel and she was hired to write a movie. “Thankfully I have some projects to keep me busy so I have at least a little bit of structure. I’m also trying to stay on top of the housework and taking care of a new puppy,” she explains how she is spending time at home in Los Angeles.
