With Lots of Love to Europe… BAFTA 2023
Touted as the one of the most influential awards events to impact the Oscars, this year’s BAFTA’s took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London. It was a busy weekend of tea parties, cocktail receptions and dinners, some hosted by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences at the Claridge’s Hotel, the National Gallery, or Soho House.
If BAFTA is a bellwether for the Academy Awards with its 6000+ members, thousands of whom are also voting members for the Oscars, so is the Directors Guild Awards held the night before. Four directors (Todd Field, Martin McDonagh, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were nominated for BAFTA’s and DGA awards on the same evening. Some flew straight to London from LA for the latter awards event.
Luckily, this choice was not a dilemma for the 14 first time BAFTA nominees for acting, including Ana de Armas, Angela Bassett, Colin Farrell, Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Paul Mescal and Ke Huy Quan.
This was the 76th BAFTA’s.
The film that came with the most nominations (14 in total) was the German Oscar entry, All Quiet on the Western Front, equaling Crouching Tiger, comparable to the number of nominations for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001). The big question was which movie would walk away with more BAFTA’s having 10 nominations each: the American Everything Everywhere All at Once, or the Irish The Banshees of Inisherin? Decorated with a Golden Globe win and a Screen Actors Guild nomination (SAG is also a very important predictor of the Oscar, given that actors comprise the bulk of Academy voters) BAFTA nominees Angela Bassett, Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett walked the red carpet facing a tough competition among themselves as the BAFTA’s don’t have separate categories for Drama and Comedy/Musical.
Overheard on the red carpet, Jamie Lee Curtis praised Everywhere Everything All at Once costar Michelle Yeoh who “has never been nominated for anything in her life before”. Nominated for All Quiet on the Western Front director Felix Kammerer quipped he would like to shoot a movie in Hawaii next year. Taron Egerton said he “wanted to meet Cate Blanchett as she’s the most impressive person”.
The Woman King director, Gina Prince-Bythewood said, “the thing that’s most amazing is the little girls who dress up knowing they can be warriors as well”. Danielle Deadwyler said she was happy “to be here to represent the team of Till, as we’re doing what she wanted in 1955”.
Sir Patrick Stewart mentioned that “one of the things I enjoy about these events is the surprises”. Michelle Yeoh remembered “while promoting the film youngsters came up to me and held my hand”. Viola Davis celebrated her 4th BAFTA nomination saying, “it means so much because we produced the film that’s inspiring a whole generation of girls”. Colin Farrell’s worst memory of shooting The Banshees of Inisherin was “getting kicked by a donkey”. Bill Nighy still hasn’t seen Living “because I never watch anything I’m in”.
Brendan Fraser gave chocolate to the BBC reporter; Diego Luna was raving about Aftersun director Charlotte Wells who “was sitting next to me at the dinner last night”. Cate Blanchett was surprised to learn that she’s nominated for the 5th time and laughed “if a sequel is in the works for TÁR I would be there”.
Brian Cox couldn’t share the storyline of the new season of Succession because “I’ve signed so many NDA’s that I absolutely can’t talk about it”. Nominee Eddie Redmayne appeared shirtless in his tuxedo, and Costume Designer Jenny Beavan came with a duster. They all wore a blue-ribbon badge honoring the Ukranian refugees.
On the heels of the DGA (won by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) the night before, right after Ariana DeBose rocked the room with a dynamic performance and Dame Helen Mirren remembered Queen Elisabeth II who “was all nations’ leading star”.
