The Many “Woods” of India
Budgets for Kollywood films are comparable to Bollywood.
Robot (Enthiran), a sci-fi featuring Rajnikanth, South India’s biggest star, garnered around $12 million tapping the overseas market and other new revenue streams. Similarly, Bahuballi an all Tollywood film posted record-breaking numbers at the box office grossing over US $218 million in India and over US $44 million overseas, for a worldwide gross of US $262 million by September 2017.
color:black;mso-color-alt:windowtext;background:white’> (Tamil) swept India’s national awards, winning in six categories including Best Director and Best Screenplay, while in 2012, Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai (Azhagarsamiyin’s Horse) was named the Best Popular Film and Aaranya Kaandam (Jungle Chapter) won a national award for Best First Film, along with the Grand Jury Award for Best Film at the South Asian Film Festival. All told six of the top ten blockbuster movies released in 2020 were from Tollywood, Kollywood, and Mollywood.
