Pioneers: Joe Adams and Estelle Hemsley
Sidney Poitier received his first nomination for a Golden Globe in 1959 (for The Defiant Ones). Two Black actors joined the trailblazing team. Joe Adams was first – in 1955 he won a Golden Globe for New Star of Year, for his work on Carmen Jones. In 1960, Estelle Helmsley was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Take a Giant Step.
