Thierry Mugler, French Fashion Designer, Dead

French fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler has died at the age of 73. Mugler was a favorite of the red carpet set with dramatic, sensual clothes and timeless pieces.

Beyoncé, Madonna, Cardi B, January Jones and Grace Jones were just some of the entertainers who flocked to his salon. He created Kim Kardashian’s flesh-colored Met “wet look” dress in 2019.

Other designers paid tribute to Mugler’s passing. Brian Atwood called Mugler a “constant inspiration.”

Mugler understood a woman’s body and created looks that celebrated the Amazon in each.

Born in Strasbourg, France on December 21, 1948, Mugler came to fame in the 1970s and defined the fickle fame of fashion for more than three decades. He retired for eight years before relaunching in 2010, though he never left the field completely, creating Beyonce’s iconic I Am… World costumes in 2009.

He also did Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance look. The industry’s corsetry often figured in the clothes of Mugler who was a former ballet dancer.

The Frenchman also created films and his photographs explored the human form. His fragrance, Angel was a bestseller.

In 1994, he told The New York Times, “I don’t believe in natural fashion. Let’s go for it! The corset. The push-up bra. Everything.” His clothing was shown in a retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris: “Thierry Mugler: Couturissime.”
