Vintage Cannes: 1990- David Lynch is Wild at Heart

In 1977 David Lynch tried to get his first film, Eraserhead, into Cannes. ‘It didn’t happen’, he told us. ‘(The effort) was a long and complicated story.’  13 years later, however, he not only took his latest – Wild at Heart – to Cannes but also brought home the big prize, the Palme d’Or. It was the beginning of a long and beautiful relationship that would bring him three nominations more for the Palme (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive) and get him the Best Director prize (split with the Coen brothers) for Mulholland Drive, in 2001. The circle became complete in 2017 when the first two hours of his new take on the Twin Peaks series had a special showing in Cannes. ‘To me, it’s the best film festival in the universe’, he says.
