The Lore of “The Banshees of Inisherin” – A Distinctly Irish Tale on Film

If you were a fan of 2008’s In Bruges, you may be pleased to learn that The Banshees of Inisherin provides the same amount of black humor, chaos, and general shenanigans between Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Once again, under the writing and directing tutelage of Martin McDonagh – who grew his teeth as a playwright – the exchanges between Farrell, who plays the dimwitted yet loyal Pádraic, and Gleeson, playing the intent yet fickle Colm, are dramatic and brutal, biting and tender, and often terrifying.

1964: “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” Describes Timeless Appeal of Its Stars

In the early years of the Golden Globes, in addition to the Best Foreign Film category that started in 1955, there was a special award called the Samuel Goldwyn International Film Award, which was presented from 1959 to 1964. At the Golden Globes ceremony held on March 10, 1964, at the Cocoanut Grove, the winner of that prize was Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, directed by Vittorio De Sica and starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni.

“Seriously Red” Opens the Brisbane International Film Festival

In the vein of Strictly Ballroom, Muriel’s Wedding, and more recently, The Sapphires, comes another Australian musical comedy, Seriously Red, about a redhead realtor who turns her life around when she achieves her dream of becoming a Dolly Parton impersonator. Directed by Gracie Otto (Under the Volcano), the film, which premiered at the recent Brisbane International Film Festival on October 27, was written by Krew Boylan who takes on the leading role as Raylene ‘Red,’ Delaney.
