Looking back to the middle of the 20th century, it becomes apparent how strong the feelings about the disastrous war years still lingered in the public consciousness. But the foreign journalists’ selection of the most significant dramas of 1958 reveals an interesting shift in its viewpoint: to examine delicately reconciling with former enemies.

At the 27th Busan International Film Festival, Tony Leung, an actor and singer from Hong Kong, was presented with the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award. On February 23, 1956, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held the 13th Golden Globes at the Cocoanut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The lavish nightclub, known as Hollywood’s “first playground of the stars,” was the top venue of the Golden Globes for 10 of the next 12 years.

At the London Film Festival, writer-director Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio, In Fabric, The Duke of Burgundy) presented his new film, Flux Gourmet, followed by a Q and A after the screening.  This eccentric film isn’t for everyone, and is, indeed, an acquired taste.

In the 1950s, there were a few years when multiple films were awarded the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film (now Best Non-English Language Film), and 1955 was one of those years. The 12th Golden Globes were held on February 24, 1955, at the Ambassador Hotel, and, befitting the organization’s international roots, four foreign films were voted the winners by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
