The closing credits, featuring some of the names of the filmmakers juxtaposed on a cave wall, beneath the sound of a crackling fire, speak in a powerfully direct and simple way to the need for storytelling, which is long hardwired into mankind. So, is this director Rodney Ascher’s sly way of acknowledging that his latest film, A Glitch in the Matrix, is itself an exercise in flamboyant narrative indulgence, despite its nonfiction roots? If so, it’s perhaps too cute by half, but also emblematic of the fitful engagement of this intellectually playful yet ultimately frustrating documentary, which unfolds as a mixture of epistemological surveying and philosophical spitballing.

Cloris Leachman, whose acting career spanned eight decades, has died of natural causes, age 94. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for acting in motion pictures, and lost, three years in a row, but won the fourth time, as Best Actress in a Television Series, Comedy or Musical for her lead performance in Phyllis (1975).

The Auschwitz Report is based on the true story of German documents smuggled out of the titular concentration camp in April 1944, which proved the horrifying scale of the Third Reich’s attempted “Final Solution. ” At the movie’s center is Noel Czuczor, who stars as Alfréd Wetzler, one of two men who, after more than a full year of meticulous escape planning, set off on a treacherous journey through mountains and underground tunnels.

Claiming to be “based on true events,” Twiceborn tells the story of Satoru Ichijo, a highly successful businessman who gives up everything to pursue his higher calling. The protagonist is based on real-life spiritual leader Ryuho Okawa and his rise as the founder and CEO of Happy Science Group, a religious sect that claims eleven million followers in the world.

Hollywood has dipped its toes into board game movies a handful of times over the past few years, but in Malaysia this was a novelty, until brothers Viknes and Thanesh Perrabu drew inspiration from an ancient Snake and Ladder board game. The game originated in India many centuries ago and was called “Paramapatham”.

The Guit brothers, Harpo and Lenny, are bringing their directorial debut movie, Mother Schmuckers, to the 2021 virtual edition of Sundance as the first ever Belgian entry to the famed Midnight Section devoted to genre and extreme cinema. Set in Brussels, the story follows two brothers, Issachar (Maxi Delmelle) and Zabulon (Harpo Guit – also co-director), both in their twenties, who have not quite emotionally evolved into manhood.

Golden Globe nominee Walter Bernstein, who died in Manhattan aged 101, was one of the last survivors of the blacklist, the McCarthy era's witch hunt that destroyed the Hollywood careers of writers, actors, and other industry folks in the 1950s. Bernstein not only rebuilt his career but used his experience to craft an award-winning movie about his travails and survival.
