Day three of San Diego Comic-Con 2019 ended with a Marvel marathon, but before that, an assortment of extraordinary beings - and the people who summon and bring them to life - did the honors at the Convention Center.

The Walking Dead has had no shortage of core cast members depart over the years, from Jon Bernthal, Scott Wilson, Steven Yeun and Lauren Cohan to, most recently, of course, star Andrew Lincoln, who left last year. Danai Gurira, who joined the hit post-apocalyptic horror show in its third season, will be the latest to depart, when she cycles off the series in its upcoming 10th season, debuting October 6.

Its very title provides a hint at its mortality and high rate of turnover, but there’s an undeniable shadow hanging over the upcoming 10th season of The Walking Dead, which returns on October 6. It will the first for the post-apocalyptic horror TV show without erstwhile series lead Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).

There's no passion as fan passion, as San Diego Comic-Con proves every year. This year, super heroes took a slight step back to fantasy - the genre of choice, aiming to follow the magical power of Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

“It’s mainly just a kick to the balls — I think that’s what we’re really just going to be honing in on,” said Cobie Smulders during a recent stop by the HFPA Comic-Con lounge. “Or using things that I find laying around — like a baseball bat or a rake or whatever.

Though celebratory in nature, San Diego Comic-Con is reflexively oriented toward the future — the new films, TV shows and graphic novels that loom on the pop-cultural horizon. But when you’ve just earned $2.

The annual pilgrimage to San Diego has begun - for fans, a Summery Halloween of sorts; for studios, streamers and related businesses, one of the most important events in the industry.
