In terms of numbers, it was a lousy Labor Day weekend, actually one of the worst in the past few years. It was supposed to belong to The Transporter Refueled, but the replacement of Jason Statham with Ed Skrein did not bring much luck and the new installment of the franchise ended its first week of release just above $7 million, surprisingly beaten even by A Walk in the Woods, starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson which took $8 million and third place.

Mass Hysteria Hits Venice

Star power finally ignited the Lido in earnest with the arrival of Johnny Depp for the premiere screening of Black Mass and hordes of fans – many of whom had spent the night waiting – besieged the Palazzo del Cinema. Scott Cooper’s telling of the life story of Boston gang boss Whitey Bulger and his unholy alliance with FBI agent John Connelly features a stellar cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Corey Stoll, Kevin Bacon and Peter Sarsgaard, but the molten core of this movie is undoubtedly Depp who proves, as Cooper put it in Venice, to be a superstar willing to take risks that few others would.
