D23 is Disney’s response to Comic-Con, a “fan fest” designed to foster maximum engagement and excitement for the studio projects, memorabilia and that elusive (and lucrative) concept: Disney culture. So on the weekend of August 14-15, when temperatures soared over 100 degrees throughout Southern California, the studio gathered fans and media at the Anaheim Convention Center for the fourth D23 Expo – the bi-annual celebration of all things Disney.

Tom Cruise was still king of the markets this week as Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation managed to gather an extra $46 million out of 62 territories, for a worldwide gross of $373 million. Mission’s 5th installment was number one in France and in Brazil, where it celebrated its debut with $7 and $3.

Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies will début at the 53rd New York Film Festival. The Cold War spy drama, written by the Coen Brothers and starring Tom Hanks and Amy Ryan is part of a substantial line-up of world premieres that also includes Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as daredevil Philippe Petit of walk-between-the-Twin-Towers fame; the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, directed by and starring Don Cheadle as the jazz giant; and Laura Israel’s documentary Don’t Blink, about photographer Robert Frank.
