Defying negative reviews, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania lived up to its buzz as the first major tentpole movie of 2023. With an 84 percent audience exit score on Rotten Tomatoes contrasting against the critics’ verdicts, Paul Rudd’s third outing as the diminutive superhero surpassed the opening earnings of his first two Ant-Man films.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania led the Chinese box office this weekend, knocking off The Wandering Earth 2 from its perch on top of the list. The film grossed $19.

Touted as the one of the most influential awards events to impact the Oscars, this year’s BAFTA’s took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London. It was a busy weekend of tea parties, cocktail receptions and dinners, some hosted by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences at the Claridge’s Hotel, the National Gallery, or Soho House.

The German drama The Teachers’ Lounge (Das Lehrer Zimmer) from director İlker Çatak, starring Leonie Benesch, held its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. The feature tells the tale of a first-time schoolteacher, Carla Nowak (Benesch), who is committed to teaching mathematics and physical education to her class of seventh graders.

The 38th edition of the Santa Barbara Film Festival took place from February 8 to 18, offering movie screenings and celebrity tributes. Receiving variously named awards for their performances and participating in conversations were Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever directed by Ryan Coogler, Cate Blanchett for TÁR written and directed by Todd Field, Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Brendan Fraser for The Whale by Darren Aronovsky, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson for The Banshees of Inisherin written and directed by Martin McDonagh.

The first person that comes to mind when one thinks of the art of metal bending is Uri Gellar, a popular magician and self-described psychic legendary in the 1970’s. The Israeli born entertainer claimed to have paranormal powers and through his psychokinetic feats, he could bend spoons, nails, and keys using the power of his mind.

The Berlin International Film Festival, also known as the Berlinale, is one of the world's largest and most prestigious film festivals. It has gained a reputation for being the most political of the leading film festivals owing to its origins as a divided city on the front lines of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the West.

While recently promoting his latest movie, the screenlife thriller Missing, Ken Leung shared how, when he was cast in his first major film, the 1998 blockbuster Rush Hour, he told its director Brett Ratner that he wanted to treat the part as if he’ll never be in a film again.   The 53-year-old actor meant it as a reminder to himself.

While there remains much progress still yet to be made, younger generations of today can often get a sense of just how much the world has changed just by looking back at movies from 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 years or more ago. For people of all ethnicities, but especially persons of color, what they generally see — and don’t see — can be both instructive and heartbreaking.

  As we continue exploring Black History Month, HFPA member Kimberly Reyes recently sat down on zoom with two influential filmmakers who have unique credentials to address both where we stand and where we should be headed in entertaining and educating audiences to better understand history. Also in perfect timing for the milestone month, producer Chris L Jenkins and director Brandon Kramer are promoting their own documentary film, The First Step, which followed media personality and civil rights activist Van Jones as he attempted to build bridges during the Trump era and bring people together from both political parties to pass a landmark criminal justice bill on prison reform, The First Step bill.
