The new year brought a big jump in the box office in both, Germany and Austria, only to drop again on the second weekend of 2022. The hopeful start was short-lived partially due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, and we are not even talking about a pandemic; the weather was perfect in both countries and people flocked to the ski slopes instead of the movie theaters.

The 79th Golden Globe Awards marked two wins for the HBO Max series Hacks, notably for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, as well as lead actress Jean Smart who took the honors for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy. Her co-star, Hannah Einbinder, also received a nomination in the same category.

Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, along with Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, led all nominations for the 79th Golden Globe Awards with a total of seven. In the end, Campion’s film took home the big award of the night winning Best Motion Picture – Drama, in addition to winning Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for Kodi Smit-McPhee and Best Director for Campion.

Not only did it win for Best Television Series - Drama, co-stars Sarah Snook and Jeremy Strong also won the Golden Globe for their portrayals of sister and brother Shiv and Kendall Roy in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor categories.

Leave it to Steven Spielberg to be daring enough to do a second feature-length adaptation of the beloved stage musical, West Side Story. After all, the 1961 first big-screen adaptation, directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, is considered a landmark movie musical.
