2022 Summer Movies and Series

On June 20, 1975, Hollywood released a movie that would not only break records for years to come but, also, for better or worse, change the way the industry would forthwith release and market their product. The movie and its director created what is now widely known as the ‘opening weekend.

Perusing through the television landscape of the summer of 2022, viewers are tuning in to new episodes to some of the mediums most cutting-edge and innovative series. Stranger Things, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, The Umbrella Academy, Westworld and Peaky Blinders have returned to their streaming homeland while debuting shows such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Old Man, Loot, The Black Hamptons and the highly-anticipated House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones, get their chance to hook viewers into binging weekends.

We still vividly remember the little freckled redhead girl in front of us who was shy but very smart. It was her film debut in Disney’s The Parent Trap, directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers.

The temperatures are high, ice cream drips, and the sound of waves – or the splash of the pool – fills the air. Kids are on vacay and the summer spills endlessly.

Imagine one of my childhood movie-watching experiences when I was a kid growing up in Calasiao, in the province of Pangasinan, Philippines: It is nighttime in a grassy open area beside the town’s church, built in 1588. A projector shows Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii on a screen mounted atop a truck.

Summer always reminds us of the memorable time when we visited the set of Mamma Mia!, the romantic comedy film directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson, based on the latter’s book from the 1999 musical of the same name. We can still vividly recall that summer in June of 2008 when the cast, led by Meryl Streep, talked to us.
