2023 Golden Globes

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a young filmmaker who loved three things — cars, movies, and Flash Gordon — was somewhat adrift in a strange universe. His generation was taking over the movie industry after the major studios had to redo their financial plans thanks to directors and actors going rogue and independent.

Maniacs with chainsaws, killers in ski masks, poltergeists, vampires, zombies, murderous clowns, homicidal puppets, or a grotesque figure like Freddie Krueger torturing kids in their dreams — this entire procession of freaks and shrieks can rely on the adoration of insatiable fans. Yet horror films typically scare away awards jurors.

He had words with God. But just in case the good lord did not hear him, he consulted a matchmaker to find husbands for his five daughters.

The 28th Golden Globes ceremony was held on February 5, 1971, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. That night, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored the best of the best in film and television in 1970.

Defying George Orwell’s famous quote that, “In our age, there is no such thing as ‘keeping out of politics,’” the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have always done their best to stay out of it. Only three connection points to politics have been acceptable: not overtly shying away from awarding films or TV shows with a strong political vision, such as Costa-Gavras’s Z.

Golden Globe winner and three-time nominee Diahann Carroll had one of the most unexpectedly successful careers, given the times and the country in which she was born. The decision of Richard Rodgers, of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame, to cast the young African American actress in the musical No Strings in 1962 was one of those moments when a huge barrier was broken in the entertainment business.

The 24th Golden Globes were held on February 15, 1967, at the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel, one of the hottest social spots for in-the-know Angelenos in the 1960s. Multiple Grammy-nominee Andy Williams hosted the ceremony in the company of Corinna Tsopei, Miss Universe 1964 turned Miss Golden Globes 1967.

At the 1966 Golden Globes ceremony, held at the Ambassador Hotel on January 31, English filmmaker David Lean won the Best Director Golden Globe for his classic love story Doctor Zhivago. It was the third time in under ten years that the legendary director won this award in the same year his movie was feted as Best Picture – Drama, following previous double-wins in 1963 for Lawrence of Arabia and 1958 for The Bridge on the River Kwai.
