2023 Women's History Month

Dorothy Emma Arzner, born on January 3, 1897, in San Francisco, grew up in Los Angeles. Hanging out and helping out in her parent’s restaurant, the Hoffman Café in Hollywood, young Dorothy served and observed Hollywood’s elite of her day, mostly silent movie stars such as Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Mack Sennett, and stage legend Sarah Bernhardt.

The Law According to Lidia Poët is a sumptuous who-done-it with feminist overtones. It stars Italian actress and singer Matilda De Angelis (The Undoing) as the real-life heroine Lidia Poët.

The year was 2021, and the place the Cannes Film Festival.  La Civil, a co-production between Romania, Belgium, and Mexico, shocked the audience at the Un Certain Regard section with the poignant tale of a mother who is looking for her kidnapped daughter in the dangerous areas of Northern Mexico.

Women have always been part of the history of cinema, but only in the last few decades has their presence behind the camera gained relevance, allowing audiences to see a construction or de-construction of what it is to be a woman and a man in society. In Latin America, a small group of pioneering women filmmakers managed to express their talent in a space heretofore reserved exclusively for men.

When Nigeria’s Filmhouse Group Holdings completed the repositioning of its FilmOne Studios division, it announced that Mimi Bartels was appointed General Manager.   FilmOne Studios will be a standalone production outfit separate from FilmOne Entertainment.

One of the many standout films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Adura Onashile’s feature debut Girl. The film follows the mother-daughter unit Grace and Ama as they try to adapt to life in Scotland after escaping unspeakable violence in their native Republic of the Congo.

The Law According to Lidia Poët is an Italian television series streaming on Netflix, inspired by the true story of the first female lawyer in Italy. Set in the 1880s in the historic city of Turin in the Piedmont region – it had been capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1864 – each of the six episodes deals with a fictional murder mystery, brilliantly solved by this fearless young woman, who offers legal representation to the person unjustly accused of the crime and conducts daring investigations to prove their innocence and discover the real culprit.
