Cannes Film Festival

You could call The Dead Don’t Die a neo-noir small town zombie comedy. The apocalypse here hits the small upstate hamlet of Centerville, an actually slightly off-center Mayberry style all-American town, inhabited by zany characters: a movie buff convenience store clerk, amiably gruff diner waitresses, a resident mumbling racist (Steve Buscemi), the motel owner and two somewhat hapless sheriff deputies (Chloë Sevigny and Adam Driver) led by nonplussed sheriff Bill Murray.

The weather was perfect Riviera spring, the photographers were at the ready, bizarre creatures roamed the Croisette (some of them promoting a new kids' movie) and the Palais des Festivals hosted its first press conference and its first gala screening. The 71st  Cannes Film Festival is officially open.

The Golden Globes precede the Cannes Film Festival by five years –  Cannes is celebrating 70 years and the Globes will have their 75th gala on January 7th, 2018. But the two events caught up with each other rather quickly.

A generous selection of 20 titles (against last year’s 19 and 2014’s 18) with a mix of festival perennials, first-timers and exciting segues by recent buzz-worthy filmmakers sets the tone for this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.  The announcement of the 2016 edition of the event – its 69th- was made this morning in Paris by festival delegate general Thierry Fremaux and festival president Pierre Lescure.
