HFPA Restoration Summit 2020

The HFPA is committed to preserving our film record, in all its expressions. That commitment extends beyond recognized classics to independent and genre films.

Filmmaker, lecturer, pianist and “Indiana Jones of film restoration”, Serge Bromberg, regaled the Summit audience with tales from the seminal days of film, when Georges Méliès, the Lumière brothers and other pioneers invented a new art form – and changed history forever. .

The HFPA funded the 4K restoration of Fellini’s Roma which was completed by the world-famous restoration labs of the Cineteca di Bologna. The Cineteca’s founding director Gianluca Farinelli joined us for the West Coast premiere of the new print – and a master class on the Golden Globe-winning Italian master.

Actress, producer, activist and living film legend Jane Fonda was a panelist at our first Summit in 2019. That’s where the idea was born to restore FTA, the documentary on the anti-war movement in the US military, with and produced by Fonda and Donald Sutherland in 1971.

The second annual HFPA Restoration Summit was held on February 15 and 16 and presented at the historic Egyptian Theater in association with the American Cinematheque. .
