Morgan Freeman

In 1982, Mister Sidney Poitier, the first Black artist to win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 1964 for Lilies of the Field, also was the first African American to receive the coveted Cecil B. deMille Award.

They say Morgan Freeman plays characters with a calm and reassuring demeanor: well he's also the voice of God! Since Bruce Almighty (2003), Freeman has added this honor to his many accolades. “I gravitate towards gravitas”, Freeman was quoted to say to Variety at the time, with his distinctly ironic tone.

This iconic moment made us tear up! The legendary Sidney Poitier, himself a Cecil B. deMille-recipient honors Morgan Freeman with a little help from Dame Helen Mirren who added humor to the presentation.

Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy both win Golden Globes for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical for Driving Miss Daisy, at the awards ceremonies held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday, January 20, 1990.   Directed by Bruce Beresford from the play by Alfred Uhry, the movie is about the 25-year friendship between an African-American chauffeur and the white Southern lady who employs him.

Cecil B. deMille recipient Morgan Freeman, interviewed by the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press in 1997 about Amistad directed by Steven Spielberg, spoke about the history of slavery in America.

Beginning in 1952 when the Cecil B. deMille Award was presented to its namesake visionary director, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has awarded its most prestigious prize 69 times.

Los Angeles City College unveiled its newly renovated Cinema/TV department theater dedicating it to Golden Globe-winning actor Morgan Freeman. Freeman is a distinguished alum of the school – one of the city’s oldest educational institutions – and he is in good company: Clint Eastwood, James Coburn, Mark Hamill, and Laurence Fishburne also took classes here on their way to legendary careers.
