At this year’s Academy Awards, costume designer Ruth E. Carter became the first African American woman to win multiple Oscars in any category – winning her first for the 2018 Marvel blockbuster, Black Panther, and this time for the 2022 long-awaited sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

In honor of International Women’s Day, Hollywood Foreign Press Association member David Caspi hosts this episode of our Golden Globes Around the World podcast series featuring Israeli actresses, sisters Moran Atias and Shani Atias, to discuss their new women empowerment initiative titled “Me First”. Moran Atias first rose to fame as a fashion model in Italy, with noted designer Roberto Cavalli taking her under his wing and later walking the runways for major brands, namely Dolce and Gabbana with whom she formed a close bond.

Los Angeles native, Florencia Martin, received her first Academy Award nomination this year as production designer of Damien Chazelle’s Golden Globe Best Picture nominee, Babylon. She also was production designer for Golden Globe-nominated Blonde.

In honor of 2023 Black History Month, we are rewinding to 2018, when HFPA member Alessandra Venezia had the privilege of interviewing Spike Lee - writer, director, actor, producer, author and educator who helped revolutionize Modern Black Cinema and inspired countless generations of black filmmakers who have continued to enrich the landscape of film and black culture. Spike’s unique voice captivated audiences from the start, with early films including She’s Gotta Have It (1986), School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989) and 25th Hour (2002).

  As we continue exploring Black History Month, HFPA member Kimberly Reyes recently sat down on zoom with two influential filmmakers who have unique credentials to address both where we stand and where we should be headed in entertaining and educating audiences to better understand history. Also in perfect timing for the milestone month, producer Chris L Jenkins and director Brandon Kramer are promoting their own documentary film, The First Step, which followed media personality and civil rights activist Van Jones as he attempted to build bridges during the Trump era and bring people together from both political parties to pass a landmark criminal justice bill on prison reform, The First Step bill.

Writer, director and producer Ryan Murphy won his first Golden Globe in 2005, when his FX series Nip/Tuck won the Best TV Drama Golden Globe. So, it felt like a full circle moment last month when the HFPA proudly presented Murphy with the Carol Burnett Award for Lifetime Achievement in Television, prompting one of the most memorable and moving speeches of the evening.

Not rain, sleet or snow could stop our intrepid HFPA members, Yong Chavez and Miriam Spritzer, from attending the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah last week and hitting all the buzzed-about screenings. We quiz the journalists about the vibe, the packed cinemas and great Q&A, and, of course, what they thought of the movies that everyone else was talking about, including: Eileen (Anne Hathaway), Theatre Camp, Magazine Dreams (Jonathan Majors), Past Lives, Shortcomings and You Hurt My Feelings (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

 The Golden Globes are back, and the 80th anniversary of the awards show was a resounding success both critically and with the stars in the room. Many also let us know on social media and from the stage as winners just how happy they were to be back at the Beverly Hilton in a room full of stars and TV and film top executives.

As we continue on our 80-day Countdown to the 80th anniversary of the Golden Globe Awards, we arrive at 2013, and the unforgettable acceptance speech by Golden Globe winner Jodie Foster after she received the Cecil B. deMille award, and candidly addressed her sexuality, her family and her life in the arts to a moved crowd who gave her a standing ovation.
