It's a rich theme that has been embraced and referenced by filmmakers and stars in many ways throughout the years, with results as unique as their talents.

A big surprise at the French box office this week: Top Gun: Maverick is such a success in France that the movie is coming back at number 1. Directed by Joseph Kosinski with Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and Jennifer Connelly, this sequel is about Pete “Maverick” Mitchell who continues to push his limits as a test pilot and in charge of training a detachment of young graduates from the Top Gun school for a special mission that no pilot would have ever imagined.

Tom Cruise was the top gun during the four-day Memorial Day weekend. Top Gun: Maverick flew high in the box office stratosphere, becoming the biggest Memorial Day opening in history and the biggest bow in the actor’s career.

As expected, there was no stopping the Top Gun sequel's steep blastoff: it broke the speed barrier all over the world, and the German-speaking countries were no exception. After a more or less stagnant four weeks in the German charts, there were lots of shake-ups this last weekend, most coming from domestic films.

As stated last week, Italy's box office revenues, with the summer on its way, rely solely on blockbuster movies. A trend that has been confirmed with the highly-anticipated Top Gun: Maverick, which premiered on May 21 and 22 in The Space movie theaters.

30 years before the spectacular opening of this year's Cannes Film Festival, Tom Cruise - with then-wife Nicole Kidman - made a more discreet visit to the Croisette. Cruise and Kidman were the stars of the film that close the festival: Far and Away, directed by Ron Howard.

Tom Cruise, long known for his strong relationship with exhibitors, is still busy shooting the latest installment of his Mission: Impossible franchise. So he wasn’t able to attend CinemaCon 2022 this week in Las Vegas, Nevada, in support of Top Gun: Maverick.
