Beautiful Boy, directed by Belgium director Felix Van Groeningen and based on the best-selling memoirs of father and son David and Nic Sheff, is the unflinching portrayal of drug addiction and its devastating effects on family dynamics. Steve Carell plays David, a San Francisco journalist who has always had a close relationship with his son Nic (played by Timothée Chalamet).

In his much-awaited return Matthew Weiner, creator of the seminal, 13-time nominated (and 5 times awarded) Mad Men, has crafted a sort of film anthology series.  The Romanoffs is comprised of ten feature-length dramas built around a simple concept: each revolves around a purported descendant of the famous Russian imperial ruling family.

Bad Times at the El Royale is one of those increasingly rare pictures: a studio film which is not a sequel or adaptation but based on an original screenplay and directed by the writer and first-time director. That makes for a thoroughly original movie: a mystery thriller with Hitchcockian overtones and a plot line with more twists than a mountain road.

The third remake of the well-worn showbiz tale A Star is Born marks the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper and the feature film debut Lady Gaga. Cooper stars as country musician Jackson Maine who mentors and falls in love with struggling singer Ally (played by Lady Gaga), but as her star rises, his diminishes as he struggles with his own addiction issues.

Robert Redford is part of the history of Hollywood, that much is beyond dispute. In his way the 83 year old actor, producer and director has also made a mark on Golden Globe history with five wins in four categories – although curiously none of them Best Actor (bonus points for best guesses: trivia answer here).

Keira Knightley plays a celebrated French writer in Wash Westmoreland's sumptuous biopic, Colette. The film depicts the author's early years when she moves from the country to Paris with her boisterous and forceful husband Henry Gauthier-Villars (Dominic West), a well-known French writer and critic better known by his nickname Willy.

Jack Black and Cate Blanchett make a surprisingly kinetic combination as a witch and warlock in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, a fantasy comedy film directed by Eli Roth and based on the beloved 1973 children's book of the same name written by John Bellairs. Following in the footsteps of past Amblin Entertainment films like The Goonies and Gremlins, the film mixes horror and humor through the eyes of a child, as 10-year-old Lewis (played by Owen Vaccaro) steps into the strange world of his oddball uncle (Black) and the secrets long held in the spooky house that never stops ticking.

The Sinner, the hit USA Network series, executive produced by Jessica Biel, has the intriguing crime premise of knowing the how, but not knowing the why. In its first season Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) delved into the past of a troubled young woman (played by Jessica Biel).
