Horror master Wes Craven died in his Los Angeles home this past Sunday August 30, 2015 after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 76.

Two-time Golden Globe nominee Peter Bogdanovich certainly knows a thing or two about screwball comedies. Back in the 1970s, the legendary director revived the classic Hollywood genre with his hit films Paper Moon (which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director) and What’s Up, Doc?.

HFPA archivist Elisa Leonelli investigates a little-known chapter in Golden Globes history. There has been some confusion about the Henrietta Awards, at times co-mingled with the Golden Globes, so we did archival research in the early history of the HFPA, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, to solve the mystery.

The HFPA’s resident musical historian Phil Berk uncovers a “lost” Fox gem scored by Kurt Weill As an avid collector of Broadway musical LPs, in 1955 I happened upon a rare recording of songs written by Kurt Weill for a long forgotten 20th Century Fox musical called Where Do we Go From Here? The recording boasted one unforgettable number entitled The Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria. Not only were the lyrics (by Ira Gershwin) nimble and witty, but the melodies were instantly hummable.

Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies will début at the 53rd New York Film Festival. The Cold War spy drama, written by the Coen Brothers and starring Tom Hanks and Amy Ryan is part of a substantial line-up of world premieres that also includes Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as daredevil Philippe Petit of walk-between-the-Twin-Towers fame; the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, directed by and starring Don Cheadle as the jazz giant; and Laura Israel’s documentary Don’t Blink, about photographer Robert Frank.
