Four-Time Golden Globe Nominee Among the Co-chairs Announced for the 2023 Met Gala
Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Dua Lipa, Roger Federer and Anna Wintour will serve as the Met’s official co-chairs when the 2023 Met Gala, which benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, takes place on May 1st.
The names of the co-chairs, who span popular culture, were released on Wednesday. The theme will honor the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. Editor in Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour, announced the theme during Paris Fashion Week in September.
Dua Lipa, known for songs like “Sweetest Pie,” “Cold Heart” and “Levitating,” is a three-time Grammy winner, while actor Michaela Coel came to fame with TV’s I May Destroy You and the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Tennis champion Roger Federer, who has recently announced his retirement after winning multiple Grand Slam singles titles among other achievements, rounds out the international cast of names and is the sole male.
The gala will have an accompanying exhibit at the Met: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The exhibit will showcase original sketches and over 150 looks, spanning the designer’s career from the 1950s through to his final collection, shown shortly after his death in 2019. The prolific designer was 85 when he died.
The official dress code for the Met will be “In Honor of Karl.”
Lagerfeld helmed some of the top fashion houses, including Chanel, Fendi, and Chloé – as well as producing his own namesake label.
