Armie Hammer on “Call Me By Your Name”

Armie Hammer was in Park City last year as part of the Birth of a Nation crew that took Sundance by storm. This year he is back with a film, which drew similar emotion from the Eccles audience. Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name is a coming of age story, hommage to a certain inimitable style European and Italian style of cinema, a queer love story and a film which elevated the level of this year’s festival. Hammer plays Oliver, a cocky, self-assured American grad student in Italy for six weeks to do research. Rooming in the lovely villa in Lombardy, which is the home of his antiquities professor he becomes, antagonist, friend and eventually lover to Elio, the professor’s adolescent son. A role, which the actor relished and which has the potential of paying off big time. The HFPA’s Scott Orlin caught up with him before the premier.
