In his red-hot career David Oyelowo has played Muddy Waters and Martin Luther King (that role in Selma earned him two of his Golden Globes nominations). In A United Kingdom he plays another historical figure, albeit not quite as renowned. And yet Prince Seretse Khama, a royal heir to the throne of Botswana became famous worldwide in the 1940s when he married Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), an English woman from London. The mixed race marriage was almost unheard of at the time and met with scandal on both sides. The HFPA’s Scott Orlin asked Oyelowo about the film.
