Farewell To The Abbey: In Conversation With Joanne Froggatt

The overarching theme of Downton Abbey was in a sense always the inexorable passage of time, and the end of the gilded Edwardian era. So it is as fitting as it is inevitable that the hugely successful and multiple Golden Globe nominated series itself would come to an end. Sure, that is small comfort to the legions of fans (upwards of 120 million worldwide) that have faithfully followed the ups and downs of the stately manor and the upstairs-downstairs doings of its inhabitants, both aristocrats and the small army of servants we have come to know and love. The show, which premiered in 2010 in Britain before putting PBS back on the map stateside, now becomes part of television history as one of the most successful period dramas ever, one honored with eight Golden Globe nominations and three wins: as Best Miniseries or Motion Picture made for Television in 2012, a Best supporting Actress Globe for dame Maggie Smith in 2013 and one for Joanne Froggatt on 2015 – all richly deserved. Froggatt was also nominated this past year and we spoke to her about the emotion of bidding the show farewell and the brilliance of the show’s creator Julian Fellowes.
