After Fox’s reboot of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it’s now NBC’s turn to revisit a classic movie as a live television musical event. Hairspray Live! reprises John Waters’ cult 1988 film – and its 2002 Broadway version – for the small screen. The campy and sweet story of inclusion through irresistible dance beats set in teeny bop era Baltimore originally featured Ricki Lake, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry, Jerry Stiller and Divine. The producers of Live have assembled an all-star cast of their own including Ariana Grande, Martin Short, Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Fierstein and newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad. The HFPA’s Scott Orlin caught up with Hudson and Fierstein to ask them about the show and the enduring relevance of Hairspray.
