There is no question that the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF, June 29-July 7) preserves and nurtures the great tradition of Central and Eastern European Cinema. Even though film festivals can be seen as collective products of a culture, the choices of this one seem conscious, and all point to keeping the idea of film as a poetic art alive.

HFPA Grantee The California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) is a cutting-edge and immersive four-week program for talented and motivated high school students in the arts, held on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts each summer. Golden Globe-nominated actor Peter Sarsgaard opened up to HFPA’s journalist Gabriel Lerman about what he learned from the Central Intelligence Agency while playing two different CIA employees: in  the Hulu limited series The Looming Tower he portrays Martin Schmidt, the head of Alec Station a section of the Counterterrorism Center that followed the steps of Osama bin Laden before 9/11;  in the Netflix docudrama Wormwood he plays a biological warfare scientist and CIA employee who dies under mysterious circumstances. “I read this book called Like a Sea of Ashes which is also a book I really highly recommend just in terms of really understanding the CIA from its inception to now, which it’s nothing like it was at the beginning, it’s changed almost constantly I think throughout the years the way it’s organized and the way it works, because the threats have changed.

HFPA Grantee The mission of the Sundance Institute International Initiative – especially at the beginning – sounded simpler than its execution ever was. The goal: to enhance the global filmmaking landscape by supporting international independent film artists through a continuum of production.
