It’s only rock ’n’ roll – but we liked it. Especially in 1985, when we had the pleasure of choosing between heavyweights such as Prince, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Kenny Loggins, Paul McCartney, and Ray Parker Jr.

Barbra Streisand has always been a trailblazer: as a singer, an actress, and a filmmaker. So it’s not surprising she also became the first female filmmaker to win the Golden Globe for Best Director, for the musical Yentl in 1984.

  As we continue our 80-day countdown to the 80th anniversary of the Golden Globe awards on January 10, 2023, we look back on 1985, the year that Kathleen Turner won her first Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical, opposite Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone. It happened only once: the celebration (in addition to the annual 1981 Golden Globe Awards) of one personality outside a Golden Globes gala. But what a personality it was — the actor, radio host, screenwriter, voiceover artist, producer, theater impresario, and film director Orson Welles.

At this point in an already established journey — from an improvised get-together, 31 years before, to well-organized galas in the International Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills — the Golden Globes had become an awards season staple, marking the elements that speak loud and clear: things are changing. Yes, there was an Earthquake among the nominees of the 32nd Golden Globe Awards ceremony, on January 25, 1975 — two of them, in fact: Best Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Original Score, by John Williams.
