As is tradition, the Golden Globe Foreign Film Symposium took place at the American Cinematheque in the historic Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard on the eve of the Awards. This year’s nominees are five exceptional films by directors from Israel, Europe and Russia: FORCE MAJEURE, Ruben Östlund (Sweden), GETT: THE TRIAL OF VIVIANE AMSALEM, Ronit Elkabetz & Shlomi Elkabetz (Israel), IDA, Pawel Pawlikowski (Poland), LEVIATHAN, Andrey Zvyagintsev (Russia) and TANGERINES, Zaza Urushadze (Georgia/Estonia).

The films that will compete for a Foreign Language Film Golden Globe this year are: Force Majeure Turist, (Sweden: Coproduction Office: Magnolia Pictures); Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem Gett (Israel: Arte France Cinema, Music Box Films); Ida (Poland/Denmark: Phoenix Film Investments, Music Box Films) Leviathan (Russia: Non Stop Production, Ministry of Cuture of the Russina Feration of Cinema Funds, RuArts Foundation, Sony Oictures Classic) Cinema Funds, RuArts Foundation, Sony Pictures Classic); Tangerines Mandariinid (Estonia: Allfilm).

This year’s nominees for Best Original Song are all strong contenders and it’s anybody’s guess who’s name will be called on Sunday night. “I don’t know if I’m too old to say this, but I really like the books,” says Cold Play’s Chris Martin, who co-wrote the music and lyrics to “ATLAS” for THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE with Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion.

The short list for the Foreign Language Oscar category released today includes entries from nine countries: Belgium, Bosnia, Cambodia, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy and Palestine. Only two of those (the Italian and Danish films) are also represented in the five nominees for a Foreign Language Golden Globe.

Zoe Saldana, Aziz Ansari and Olivia Wilde President of the HFPA Theo Kingma The race for the 2014 Golden Globe awards is officially underway with the announcement of the nominees, and award watchers have finally got an indication of which films and actors are headed for Golden Globe glory. 12 Years A Slave and the comedy-drama American Hustle top the list of nominations with seven each.
