2023 Women's History Month

Many women rightly feared that, after the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States in 2016, aided by a Republican majority in the Senate, he would appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court, whose goal would be to curtail women’s freedom of choice. This is exactly what happened, on June 24, 2022, when the constitutional right to abortion, guaranteed by the Roe v.

In the moments before Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, a woman’s voice could be heard calling, “Tell them about the dream, Martin. ” Video footage and historians note that the Reverend King appears to put aside his notes and raises his voice to speak off the cuff, his voice resonating across the throngs of people gathered on the mall in Washington DC, to reach around the world as the speech is being documented, entering the annals of history.

Golden Globe winner, Isabelle Huppert, (she won Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Elle in 2017) turns 70 today, March 16th. The French beauty is one of the most respected character actors in entertainment.

Iranian movie producer Elaheh Nobakht spoke via Zoom from Lebanon’s Beirut Women Film Festival, for which she was elected President of the competition category Documentary and Animated Shorts. The Beirut International Women Film Festival focuses on Women for Leadership, and Nobakht talks about the role of creative women in middle eastern countries and her hopes for the future.

Female Pioneer, author/ director Eva Kupper is a powerful documentary maker in Belgium, who has worked throughout her career with multiple European productions. Like many Belgian talents, Küpper graduated in 2009 from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Gent with Whatʼs in a Name, a feature-length documentary that won several prestigious prizes, including the IDFA Award for Best Student Documentary in 2010.

Finnish filmmaker Hanna Västinsalo attended the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s and Film Independent’s residency program earlier this year with her movie Palimpsest.  Her background in molecular genetics gives her film a unique point of view.

Three female directors will talk about their work, their past and future projects and their success in working in TV and streaming. HFPA member and moderator K.
